The Government of Canada supports Celebrate Canada festivities in Kelowna-Lake Country
June 28th , 2018 Kelowna, British Columbia Government of Canada
Stephen Fuhr, Member of Parliament for Kelowna-Lake Country, today announced $25,500 in federal funding under the Celebrate Canada program to ensure that our community has the best Canada Day possible. This year’s recipients included the Rotary Club of Lake Country, the Festivals and Special Events Development Society of Kelowna, and the Centre Culturel Francophone De L’Okanagan. The announcement was made on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage.
Celebrate Canada supports a series of four celebrations, starting on June 21 and ending in outstanding fashion with Canada Day on July 1.
Celebrate Canada highlights the evolution of Canada, from its Indigenous origins, to the start of the French presence and the birth of our Francophone heritage, to more recent waves of immigration that led to the development of our diverse and inclusive society.
- June 21, National Aboriginal Day, corresponds with the summer solstice—the longest day of the year and a time when many Indigenous groups celebrate their culture and heritage.
- June 24, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day: Fête nationale du Québec et de la Francophonie canadienne, combines the ancient rites of the summer solstice—a period of light and hope—with the traditional celebration in honour of the patron saint of French Canadians.
- June 27 was designated as Canadian Multiculturalism Day on November 13, 2002. It offers an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate and appreciate the contribution of various multicultural groups and communities to Canadian society.
- On July 1, Canada Day, Canadians throughout the country and the world show their pride for their history, culture and achievements.
“I want to thank the Government of Canada for supporting our local organizations and volunteers who have worked hard throughout the year planning this year’s festivities for Kelowna-Lake Country residents. I hope everyone will take the opportunity to show their love of Canada and their pride in being Canadian and create a truly memorable experience with friends and family.”
